That one item in your closet that was a steal but impossible to pair with anything.
That's the story of my $4 pants and this is how we had a happy ending.
It's difficult to picture yourself wearing a faux suede fringe jacket to brunch or american flag shorts to the mall. One can balance a statement piece by neutralizing the rest of the outfit--or go all out for a contemporary look. I got the ankle crop pant pictured above during LOFT's 50% OFF Seasonal Sale for $4. I made myself fall in love with the pants because of the price, then I found myself trying to figure out what to wear with it.
Below is a beginner's guide to styling statement pieces, like mine, without the need to shop 'til you drop.
Start with basics that complement the undertone of the piece.
Analyze and determine whether the garment is of a cool, neutral or warm undertone. This is fool proof way to bring attention to the piece and the secret behind all brick and mortar stores' merchandising.
Think of undertones as day and night: during the day is warm and peachy, at night it is cool and blue, and a neutral undertone gets along with everybody. Style the statement piece around items from your closet that are of the same undertone. Pictured above is a graphic tee with yellow and pink sequins that highlight the floral detail of the pants. The items complement each other giving the outfit a luxe feel.
Best advice ever: get comfy with it
Pick other items that make you feel like you're wearing pajamas. This will make you show off the garments with purpose.
Customers come in to retail stores and ask for advice, the salesperson shows them an outfit and the customer buys it. A week later the customer returns the items, why? Because they felt uncomfortable in the style or size. The salesperson and customer did not ask the right questions, and the same reasoning applies when pairing garments from your closet. Ask yourself what is your favorite top or bottom and pair it with the statement piece. You'll notice how jubilant you'll feel going to brunch.
***Editor's Note: pick items comfortable enough to get adjusted at the chiropractor's office without losing your sense of cool (pictured below).
Mix patterns if you want to get compliments
Mix patterns if you want a show-stopping outfit or like to get complimented by good samaritans.
Sometimes you need to talk to a stranger and make their day, so why not get complimented while you're at it. That is what happens to me on a daily basis, my too-cool-for-school outfits are such showstoppers, even cats want me to pet them (click Boris for details). If your statement piece is textured add another texture, if your statement piece is patterned add another pattern. Experimenting with colors and styles will aid in your journey to the pinnacle of fashion.
